Linking 2/4/14

If you need to bring your file into the class template file there are a couple of ways to do that. I'll tell you both and let you deiced which you'd rather do.

First Option (works best for very small instances since a lot of data is stored on the clipboard):
1.       Go to a default 3D view of your file (either from the project browser or from the icon on top)

2.       Use your mouse to click/drag and select everything you see. Doing this option only works in a 3D view because you can only select items in your view so if you tried to select all in plan you would miss anything above/below your cut plain.
3.       Copy what you have selected
4.       Open the class template file and paste it.
5.       Depending on what you've loaded into the project prior to copy/paste it may give you an option menu or error message. Glance at this and see if its anything important or if it's just informing you about a parameter change.

Second Option (a few more steps but the better bet and should be the method used as a habit working in studio):
1.       Save and close your file made outside of the class template.
2.       Open the template file
3.       Go to the Insert Tab>Link>Link Revit

4.       In the Import/Link RVT menu that opens go to your previously saved file and select Open.
5.       Now in the template file if you hover your mouse over the linked file you'll see a blue box and if you click everything is selected. If you're seeing this you are on the right track and it is showing you that the file is grouped.
6.       Click the file and see that everything is blue (selected).
7.       In the tab Modify| RVT Links>Link select Bind Links.

8.       A Bind Link Options menu will open and ass what you want to include. Select Grids and Levels (as you haven't made details yet) and hit ok.

9.       When all goes well, you'll be given an alert telling you that it loaded properly and you are given an option to delete the link. Select Remove Link.
10.   Now if you select your model everything turns blue but the bounding box is dashed. Select Ungroup in the Modify| RVT Links>Link tab.
11.   Lastly, go to an elevation view and you'll see the duplicate Levels (if you chose them to be imported). Selected levels that aren't needed and delete them.
